LIBRARY OBJECTIVES
Briefly, the library exists to provide a variety of resources; book and non-book alike and ancillary services that support and extend the University’s programmes of instruction and research. In its attempt to achieve the above goal, the library sets out deliberately to:
1. Ensure a high degree of relevance of its collection to the needs of the University community
2. Ensure the  maximum use of the resources and the facilities it provides
3. Give qualitative reference and information service to its clients
4. Join its staff with their teaching colleagues in making the use of its resources as an integral part of the educational process.
LIBRARY ORGANIZATION
The Library is organized on Subject Division basis, the University Library is divided into three broad units; namely
Administration,
Subject Libraries,
and Support

The latter embraces the Bindery and Technical Services, which includes Orders, Cataloguing, Circulation, Serials and Reprography. This Unit is generally responsible for the acquisition and processing of all library materials. The Library Administration, which includes the Systems unit, sees to the effective running of the University library. The Systems unit is responsible for the computerization and digitization of the library. The Subject Libraries are essentially service points. Numbering  and corresponding roughly with the number of faculties in the university, the subject libraries seek to concentrate at one point and for the convenience of the reader, the range of library materials of interest to clients irrespective of their format. For example, for Arts, all the reference and lending books in that discipline are brought together with reading tables in close proximity. In addition, each subject library is manned by a librarian; whose primary duties includes the development of the collection and provision of reference and information services to the clientele. It should be noted that in addition to the subject libraries, there exist the following separate collections:
1. general section where books of a general nature e.g. general encyclopedias and dictionaries are shelved
2. theses and dissertations collection
3. microform collection
4. Nigerian federal and state government documents
5. intergovernmental publications
6. non-governmental organizations
7. conference proceedings; and
8. serials collection.
All the above are housed in the Documents Section except for ‘1’ and ‘8’ which are shelved separately from other books in the open shelves in the respective subject libraries.

COURSE IN THE USE OF THE LIBRARY
Consistent with its aims to become a "teaching library," the University Library offers both formal and informal courses to the students on ‘ use of Library’. These courses which have the main objective of making the students better exploiters of the library resources are at present two in number: the Introductory Course, G.S.T. 111, which forms part of the compulsory Use of English Course offered to first year students and, “Advanced Use of Library” course offered to academic departments that request for it for their students who are about embarking in the writing of final year research projects. For the present time, postgraduate students are assisted only informally when they notify the library staff of their bibliographical problems. All Lecturers/students are urged to take advantage of this facility by always directing their libraries related queries to the relevant Subject Librarian.
